In the post-epidemic era,NEET and Hikikomori are two emerging youth groups that are attracting increasing attention and discussion. The former is who refuse to go to school, work,or participate in employment or educational training, while the latter is a group of people who have been out of society for at least six months or longer, avoiding most social activities and living in seclusion. The latter is who isolated himself from society for at least six months or even longer, withdrawing from most social activities and living at home. The NEETs who are not working and not studying can be considered as the incubation period of the Hikikomori, who may develop hidden behaviors if there is a lack of relevant guidance and intervention. The term Hikikomori originated in Japan as a serious social withdrawal syndrome, which is closely related to the rapid socio-economic changes Japan experienced after World War II and its unique cultural background, and has affected the lifestyle, behavior and psychology of all Japanese people. With the global economic and social development, the issue of Hikikomori has gradually spread from Japan to the international level and has become an increasingly serious global social issue.Although there is no specific survey on Hikikomori in China, the number of Hikikomori has been increasing dramatically based on psychiatric social work and some related social practices on youth psychology. As China’s economic center, the problem of Hikikomori in Shanghai is becoming more and more serious. To respond to this problem, this study uses qualitative research methods to conduct in-depth interviews with NEETs,Hikikomori and their guardians and social workers at different levels of seclusion to understand the relationship between NEETs and Hikikomori.Through in-depth interviews with NEETs and Hikikomori and their guardians and social workers,we understand the journey of the NEETs and Hikikomori and the characteristics of the stages of transformation between them, analyze and extract the paths and patterns behind the transformation, and develop strategies and suggestions for social work intervention in this phenomenon. The study shows that although the NEETs and Hikikomori share common causes and maintenance mechanisms, there are also family and individual differences, which lead to the transformation of some of the NEETs to Hikikomori. These differences lead to the transformation of some NEETs to Hikikomori; The process of transformation follows a path of being stressful,de-stressing and finally stress-free.In addition, this study summarizes the pathway of hidden behavior formation for Hikikomori based on subjective social preferences and objective social resources. This study is hoped to raise the awareness of NEETs and Hikikomori in the society, promote relevant scientific and empirical research, and contribute to the localized development of youth social work.
