Children’s safety has always been the focus of social attention. The reason for this is mainly because children are not fully matured at present, their awareness of self-protection is relatively weak, and accidental injuries are more likely to occur, which has a great impact on children and their families.Left-behind children in communities relocated to alleviate poverty will face a complex social environment in the process of growing up because they have moved away from their original more familiar living environment,so they need to clarify the main position of self-protection in order to minimize the harm to them from the outside world and thus grow up better.Traditional methods of safety education and propaganda often focus on the teaching of teachers or transmitters, ignoring the interest and acceptance of left-behind children, and there are fewer methods on how to effectively carry out self-protection for left-behind children,so it is more urgent to find a way to enhance self-protection for left-behind children. This study takes the self-protection practice service for left-behind children in S community of Panzhou city as an example.Based on the understanding of the basic characteristics of children’s growth and the use of group work method, the social worker provides targeted services for children in need and conducts a practical study on the improvement of left-behind children’s self-protection ability in communities relocated from poverty-stricken areas by using the group work method.Based on the VAK learning theory, three methods of visual, auditory and practical learning are used to find effective ways for left-behind children to learn, such as designing vivid and interesting safety knowledge to enhance self-protection awareness, and conducting scenario simulations through group activities,so that left-behind children can learn self-protection skills through actual participation in the scenario, thus serving the purpose of self-protection.Through the development of group activities,we explore and consider the practical experience of social work intervention in self-protection for left-behind children in communities relocated from poverty-stricken areas and the shortcomings in the process of group development. The study found that group work provided a viable pathway for the promotion of self-protection among left-behind children, the group enhances the self-protection ability of group members from awareness to behavior, and the VAK learning theory is conducive to increasing children’s interest in safety knowledge and enhancing self-protection ability. At the same time, the author also put forward several thoughts:first, strengthen safety education in schools;second, strengthen the cultivation of community social organizations;and third, set up community training places for children in communities relocated from remote areas to alleviate poverty.
