| Safety is a basic need necessary for the survival and development of the individual.For underage students,it is the school’s responsibility to ensure school safety and the school’s obligation to implement safety education.Compared with students in regular schools,students in Schools for the Mentally Retarded often have a certain degree of deficiency in cognition,understanding and communication,which makes them lack of safety awareness and ability to respond effectively when danger suddenly comes,thus encountering more accidents and injuries that threaten their lives.The current safety situation is urgent,and in the face of endless accidental safety incidents,it is only right that Schools for the Mentally Retarded make safety education,a means of preventing danger and improving self-protection for students with special needs,as a key implementation and improvement work.Throughout the research results of safety education in domestic special schools,the reflections and experience summaries of front-line teachers account for a relatively large proportion of the research,and the research on the status quo survey accounts for a relatively small proportion,and among the only few studies on the status quo survey of safety education at present,fewer of them have been conducted in Schools for the Mentally Retarded.Therefore,this study decided to investigate the current situation of safety education implementation in Schools for the Mentally Retarded,to analyze the achievements and problems of safety education,then discuss the causes behind the problems and propose suggestions for improving safety education.This study takes R School,a school for the Mentally Retarded in Dalian City,as the case study,and uses the Guideline for Public Safety Education in Primary and Secondary Schools as the main research basis,and uses the interview method,observation method and case study method to investigate the current situation of implementing safety education in R School,including the current situation of the content,implementation paths and guarantee mechanisms of safety education.By analysing the results of the survey,it was found that safety education in R School has achieved certain results: safety education is provided in a variety of ways,and the content is relevant to real life;teachers’ safety literacy in first aid and firefighting is high;relevant management is in place and supplies are adequate.At the same time,there are also certain problems in safety education in R School: the content of safety education is not comprehensive;the teaching method of safety education is single;the environment creation of safety education needs further adjustment;there is a lack of special safety education materials;teachers’ medical care and safety literacy in dealing with special students’ psychological problems are insufficient.On this basis,I put forward the following suggestions for improvement: establish a sound system of safety education;improve the content of safety education;enrich the teaching methods of safety education;improve the creation of safety education environment;strengthen the school-based teaching and research activities of safety education;increase training to improve teachers’ safety literacy. |
