As the first one in the Gambia,Confucius Institute at University of The Gambia(CIUTG)plays an important role in promoting the development of Chinese language teaching and the spread of Chinese culture in the Gambia.With few research results made about Chinese teaching at present,based on SWOT theory,this paper takes Chinese teaching as the research object,uses questionnaire survey,interview methods and SWOT analysis method as the main research methods,and is combined with the writer's personal teaching experience to investigate the Chinese teaching in CIUTG.First,this paper expounds the background,significance,purpose and design of the investigation,and introduces the general development and Chinese teaching of CIUTG.Second,it reviews the worldwide Chinese teaching,theoretical study on SWOT,and the related investigation on the application of SWOT theory in Chinese teaching.Third,based on the present situation of Chinese teaching from questionnaires of the students of CIUTG,and interviews of Chinese teachers and dean,the paper analyzes the factors of internal advantages(S),internal disadvantages(W),external opportunities(O)and external challenges(T)of Chinese teaching in CIUTG in accordance with the SWOT theory,finding that Chinese teaching in CIUTG is not going well,and still faces many challenges with its disadvantages outweighing its advantages.Next combined with SO,ST,WO,WT four strategies following all above factors,this paper holds that CIUTG shall focus on overcoming internal weaknesses,improving its own educational level,and achieving sustainable development of Chinese teaching.Then it makes its corresponding suggestions from three aspects: Chinese learners,Chinese teachers and teaching content.Finally,this paper draws the conclusion and offers the reflection on the whole investigation.While comprehensively and objectively presenting the advantages,disadvantages,opportunities and challenges facing CIUTG,this paper aims to put forward the suggestions on the development of Chinese teaching in the future to promote the sustainable development of Chinese teaching in CIUTG,and to enhance the communication of Chinese culture in the Gambia.
