In the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,Chinese characters are an essential part of the Chinese learning process.Chinese characters are one of the oldest characters in existence, and the structure of Chinese characters condenses the cultural psychology and way of thinking of the Han ethnic group. As one of the radicals of Chinese characters,“Tu” is also a manifestation of the cognitive thinking mode of the Han ethnic group. This research uses all the characters of “Tu” radical in the New HSK Vocabulary Outline as the research object. From a cognitive perspective,it uses metaphor and metonymy theories to conduct research and analysis.First,This research determines the configuration of the character “Tu” and explores the cognitive metaphors and metonymy of the configuration of the character “Tu”.Through the tracing research, explore the original meaning of the character “Tu”,based on the original meaning,to explore the cognitive metaphor and metonymy mechanism of the evolution of the character “Tu”.Finally,it sorts out and analyzes the cognitive relationship between the characters of “Tu” radical and the character “Tu” in the New HSK Chinese Vocabulary Outline.Through research,it is found that in the original pictorial configuration of the earth character, the ancestors mapped the most primitive understanding of earth “a block of soil on the ground” to(?),and the creation process of its symbolic form embodies the transformation from object to image. The connection process from image to sign and sign to meaning constitutes the cognitive method of formal metaphor content. And with the development of human cognition, the cognition of the land has been further developed, using the prominent feature of “plants growing on the land” to express the meaning of “soil”.Secondly, through the exploration of the meaning of the character “Tu”,it is found that the meaning of the character is no longer limited to the meaning of “soil, mud”,but has realized the evolution and development of semantics through the form of metaphor and metonymy. On the one hand, the earth can refer to the land,a certain area, and earth work in the form of metonymy. On the other hand,it uses metaphor to express the meaning of unfashionable and uncured opium. After analyzing all the characters of “Tu” radical in the New HSK Vocabulary Outline,it is found that there is no obvious metaphor between it and the character “Tu”,only the metonymy. The cognitive mechanism of metonymy mainly includes two aspects: part of metonymy as a whole and part of metonymy as a whole.Part of the metonymy as a whole includes earth refers to land, clods, earthen materials, etc. The overall metonymy part mainly refers to soil and refers to dust. Finally, based on the above analysis, summarize the cognition rules among the characters of “Tu”radical in the New HSK Vocabulary Outline, and put forward teaching strategies and suggestions for such Chinese characters.
