The introduction of the new college entrance examination reform plan and the issuance of the "geography curriculum standards for ordinary senior high schools(2017 Revision)" are aimed at practicing the fundamental task of "cultivating morality and people",which means improving the morality, intelligence, physique and aesthetics of our students.while encourage independent thinking, spirit of innovation and higher level of moral standard. However,we emphasize too much on students' academic performance in our daily teaching. The importance of students' language skill and mathematical logic are overestimated, which harms the quality education and overall development of students.According to Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, the intelligence development levels of students are different, and each student has his own unique superior intelligence and weak intelligence. It is wrong to simply evaluating which student is the best according to his academic performance. We should care more about the advantages in every single student.Combining the theory of multiple intelligences and the existing traditional teaching strategies, this paper aims to apply the theory of multiple intelligences to the research of geography teaching in senior high school.Based on the theory of multiple intelligences, the author tries to explore the teaching strategies and methods of Geography which provides some constructive suggestions for teachers. The paper proceeds as follows:(1)In order to fully understand the current situation and characteristics of the development of multiple intelligences in senior high school students and the differences of multiple intelligences between genders.According to the analysis of 205 questionnaires, senior high school students enjoy relatively high levels in visual spatial intelligence, musical intelligence,self-cognitive intelligence and mathematical logic, but the level of physical motor intelligence and natural observation intelligence are relatively low among them. There are significant gaps between genders in interpersonal and mathematical logic intelligence.(2)This paper proposes the principle of multiple intelligences based geography teaching in senior high school, which include diversified teaching activities, daily teaching situations, democratic teaching atmosphere and multi-dimensional teaching evaluation. The corresponding teaching strategies are introduced for different kinds of intelligence which includes language intelligence, mathematical logic intelligence, visual spatial intelligence, body movement intelligence, music intelligence, interpersonal intelligence,self-cognitive intelligence and natural observation intelligence.(3)In order to verify the influence of the multiple intelligences based teaching strategies on the development of high school students' multiple intelligences, the mastery of geographical knowledge and their interest in geography learning. The "earth movement",a compulsory course in senior high school geography,is selected as a teaching design which is used to compare the teaching results of different strategies. The result shows that the theory of multiple intelligences improves understanding of geographical knowledge, and enhance the language intelligence, visual spatial intelligence, interpersonal intelligence and natural observation intelligence of students and increase their interest in learning geographical knowledge.
