Since Chinese language education was allowed in 2000,an increasing number of Indonesian schools,especially vocational high schools,have made Mandarin as an important part of their curriculum.This thesis presents findings focused on the current situation of Chinese language teaching in vocational high schools in Indonesia on three schools in Yogyakarta as the object of the research.The three vocational high schools selected for this study are SMK Dirgantara Putra Bangsa,SMK Bopkri 2 Yogyakarta and SMK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta.The research methods used in this study include questionnaires survey dispensed to the teachers and the students,teacher interviews,and literature reviews.Further,the research reflects that although Mandarin is already wellknown as a foreign language that can provide benefits for the learners in the future but the fact is the students still do not attach high importance to Chinese lessons,lack of motivation from the students,the teaching methods of the teachers are not effective enough and the schools did not give enough emphasis on Chinese classes.These problems have led to the low quality of Chinese teaching and and unsatisfactory results of students learning.Thus,the further development of Chinese teaching in vocational high schools in Indonesia is hindered.Based on these findings,the paper puts forward some corresponding suggestions in the hopes that the goverment,the schools,the teachers,and the students will make a joint effort to develop Mandarin education in Indonesia better and more effectively.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter summarizes the research background,research purpose,research content,research method and innovation of this paper.The second chapter is a detailed discussion of the history of Chinese education in Indonesia using the method of literature review to discover the early history of Chinese education,the development of Chinese education and the status quo of Chinese education.The third chapter analyzes the current situation of Chinese teaching in vocational high schools in Indonesian based on questionnaire survey,teachers interview and field observation.The fourth chapter puts forward some suggestions on improving Chinese teaching in vocational high schools based on the survey and analysis results of the third chapter.Chapter five is the conclusion of the thesis.
