Along with the accelerated ageing of China's population comes a huge number of newly retired elderly people, and the question of whether this group can adapt to the change in role to achieve active ageing has become a hot topic.Due to the traces of the unit system and the long-established living habits of the early planned economy, the communities where the retired elderly live are usually unit-type communities. The weakening of their physiological functions, the decline in their economic income, the shift in their focus of life, the reduction in their social capital and the drop in their social status pose certain challenges to their integration into their new role in retirement life. This thesis uses a casework approach in social work practice, based on role theory and activity theory,to analyse the current situation of the newly retired elderly in unitary communities in terms of role gap, lifestyle dysfunction and loss of self-worth,and to formulate service objectives to meet the needs of the clients.Based on the practical exploration, the case intervention was designed to help the clients to break away from the "problem" label, improve family and neighbourhood relationships, expand their interpersonal network and achieve their self-worth,so that they could integrate into their new roles after retirement with a more positive mindset and achieve positive ageing. The paper concludes by reflecting on the experiences of the social work interventions in the process of role adjustment, with a view to providing some reference for the social work service techniques of role adjustment for the newly retired elderly in unitary communities.
