Individual mate preference is influenced by the choices of other individuals of the same sex. When an individual observes, learns and uses other people's criteria to evaluate potential mates, mate copying effect occurs. In the whole process, through the interaction of the observer(individual),the same sex role model(other people)and the opposite sex target(potential mate of the opposite sex),mate selection and copying behavior are affected. So far,the research on the copying effect of mate selection is mainly about the perceptual preference of individuals to target under the influence of role models.Scholars have focused more on the characteristics and the relationship between the opposite target and the same sex role model, but there is little exploration on the relationship between observer and same sex role model. This study explores the influence of same-sex role models on the copying effect of college students' mate choice by manipulating other's evaluation and social distance. In study 1,110 undergraduate and postgraduate students from Nanjing Normal University were selected to manipulate the variable of other people's evaluation to explore mate copying effect when the subjects were evaluated positively and negatively by other people of the same sex to the opposite sex target, and to investigate the differences of the replication effect of mate selection among the subjects in gender, relationship status and student type. The results showed that :(1)The post-test score of target attraction was significantly higher than the pre-test score when the participants were positively evaluated by others; The post-test score of target attraction was significantly lower than that of pre-test,and the difference between the scores of girls was higher than that of boys.(2)The creative boys or kind-hearted girls were the most attractive to the subjects, while the arrogant boys or fussy girls were the least attractive to the subjects. In the first study, the author found that the evaluation of others would affect the replication effect of the subjects' mate choice. Therefore, whether the influence of the evaluation will be different due to the closeness of the relationship between others and self, this conjecture is worth further exploring. Therefore,on the basis of study 1,the study 2 introduced the variable of social distance to further explore the mate copying effect when the participants were influenced by positive or negative evaluations of good friends, ordinary classmates and strangers.A total of 65 students, including 32 boys and29 girls, were selected from Nanjing Normal University and Southeast University to investigate the difference in the reproduction effect of boy and girls' mate selection under different levels of social distance. The results showed:(1)When receiving positive evaluation from strangers, the difference between the scores of girls before and after the evaluation was significantly higher than that of boys.(2)When receiving negative evaluation from ordinary classmates, the difference between the scores of girls before and after the evaluation is significantly lower than that of boys.In summary, the conclusion of this study is as follows:(1)Both boys and girls have mate copying effect.(2)When receiving negative evaluation from others, there was a gender difference in mate copying effect, mate copying effect is greater for girls than for boys.(3)The creative or conceited boys are more likely to cause mate copying effect of girls, while the kind or fussy girls are more likely to cause mate copying effect of boys.(4)When strangers make positive evaluations on opposite-sex objects, girls are more likely to have mate copying effect. When ordinary classmates make negative evaluations on the opposite-sex objects, girls are more likely to have mate selection copying effect.
