In the visual culture perspective,images are capable of changing students' meaning constructions.As a visual culture expression,textbook illustrations influence students' aesthetic perception and values.Improving the design of elementary school language textbook illustrations based on the visual culture perspective is a brand new topic in textbook research.This thesis will help textbook illustrations perform their cultural functions and provide suggestions and countermeasures for the optimization of primary language textbooks.This thesis is divided into four parts,including the analysis of representative research methods of visual culture,the construction of a framework for the study of language textbook illustrations based on visual culture,the clarification of the basic overview of elementary school language textbook illustrations,and the attribution analysis and statistics of visual aesthetic elements and cultural values in elementary school textbook illustrations of the Ministry of Education from visual culture theory.The first part uses literature research to clarify the theoretical origins of visual culture,and re-examines and constructs a framework for the study of visual culture-based language textbook illustrations in the light of the unique functions and educational values of the Ministry's elementary school textbook illustrations,starting from both visual aesthetic elements and cultural values.The second part uses quantitative analysis methods to present a basic overview of the illustrations in primary language textbooks of the Ministry of Education from three aspects: quantity,types and characteristics.The third part uses the study of visual aesthetic elements in visual culture to present the aesthetic characteristics of the illustrations of primary language textbooks in the Ministry of Education in terms of four types of visual forms: line,color,light and shadow,and space,which are dynamic and harmonious,bright and vivid,clear and flexible,and vivid in rhythm.The fourth part uses the research method of cultural values in visual culture to present the value characteristics of the images of ethnicity culture,urbanized class,differentiated gender,and exemplary children in the illustrations of elementary school language textbooks in the Ministry of Education from the four types of cultural symbols: ethnicity,class,gender,and children.The study found that the visual culture research method is feasible for textbook illustration research.The illustrations of the Ministry's primary language textbooks present clear and realistic,lively and dynamic visual aesthetics,as well as national,universal and pleasant,positive and innocent expectations in terms of cultural values.At the same time,the illustrations of elementary school language textbooks in the Ministry of Education still need to pay attention to rural culture and improve the urbanized class bias;increase the number and status of female characters in illustrations and reduce gender role differences.
