A Practice Report On C-E Interpreting Strategies Under The Guidance Of The Interpretive Theory

With the advancement of science and technology and the development of economy,globalization has become the trend for development.The exchange and cooperation between parties in cross-culture communication are expanding and the demands for interpreting are increasing.This report is about a simulated interpreting practice.The material for this practice was taken from President Xi’s Keynote Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.Under the guidance of interpretive theory(IT),simultaneous interpreting(SI)was adopted in this practice.The Interpretative Theory divide interpreting process into three steps:comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation.For comprehension,Interpreters need to combine the extra-linguistic knowledge with the linguistic knowledge to know the source language meaning at discourse level.Deverbalization is the central part of Interpretive theory.It means removing the original linguistic forms,signs and memorizing the conveyed information in the original language.Reformulation demands the interpreter to encode and choose appropriate expressions in the target language based on the former comprehension.Under the guidance of IT,this report combines specific cases to analyze the difficulties encountered in interpreting process,for example,Chinese four-character expressions,words with Chinese characteristics,poetry sentences and parallel sentences.This report also proposes corresponding solutions for these difficulties,such as segmentation,simplification and omission,literal interpreting,addition,conversion and paraphrasing.Under the guidance of IT,the interpreter found that using those solutions mentioned above can effectively express original information and improve interpretation quality.The purpose of this report is to improve the quality of interpretation by studying interpreting strategies that interpreters can adopt in interpreting process.Interpretation with high-quality is more catering to audiences’ expression habit while accurately conveying the information of original text.
