As one of the standard modes of anaphora in Chinese, zero anaphora is an important means of discourse cohesion. The correct use of zero-anaphora by foreign students will affect the coherence and nature of their discourse expression.Based on the existing research results of zero anaphora,140 essays(about 58,000 words)from HSK Dynamic Writing Corpus were selected as study materials.Quantitative analysis, contrastive analysis and error analysis were used to investigate the distribution characteristics and errors of zero anaphora of advanced-level native English speakers and native Japanese speakers. On this basis, the causes are discussed and corresponding teaching suggestions are put forward. This research first investigates the distribution characteristics of zero anaphora among native English speakers and native Japanese speakers.Firstly, noun anaphora, pronoun anaphora and zero anaphora in native English speakers and native Japanese speakers’ compositions are marked, and the proportion of zero anaphora in the three types is counted. Then we classified the zero anaphora from the syntactic position of the antecedents and their zero anaphors respectively, investigated the number, proportion and accuracy of each type of zero anaphora, and compared the similarities and differences between native English and Japanese speakers according to the statistical results. Then, this research analyzes the manifestations and types of zero anaphora errors in native English speakers and Japanese speakers. The errors are divided into two categories: the deficiency of zero anaphora and the overuse of zero anaphora, and then further divided based on the specific conditions of the use of zero anaphora for detailed error analysis. The errors of English and Japanese native speakers are compared to explore the similarities and differences. The research found that both native English speakers and native Japanese speakers showed a trend of “pronoun anaphora > zero anaphora > noun anaphora” in their choice of anaphora, but native Japanese speakers used more zero anaphora than native English speakers. Both antecedents and their zero anaphors appear in subject position are the most commonly used types by native English speakers and native Japanese speakers.Native English speakers have more errors in using anaphora insufficiently, while Japanese native speakers have more errors in using anaphora excessively. The similarity between native English speakers and native Japanese speakers in the distribution of zero anaphora may be due to the influence of Chinese discourse structure, and the difference may be caused by the difference in the use of zero anaphora in their native language.Native English speakers and native Japanese speakers differ in the types of zero anaphora errors, which are influenced by Chinese zero anaphora rules, first language transfer, learning strategies, teaching and teaching materials, etc. In this regard,we should help foreign students to establish their awareness of anaphora, clarify the conditions for the use of zero anaphora, distinguish foreign students from different mother tongue backgrounds in teaching, and adopt targeted methods of explanation and practice.
