| Tuanshou pattern is a highly expressive and concise symbol in traditional Chinese decorative patterns,with auspicious and beautiful meanings.It was particularly popular during the Qing Dynasty and was one of the external manifestations of national characteristics and cultural symbols of that time.Originating from the seal script character "寿," it gradually developed and evolved over thousands of years,acquiring contemporary features and formal characteristics.This article first uses the method of longitudinal research to trace the early forms and semantic evolution and development of Tuanshou pattern,analyze its formal composition,and expound on the impact of the Qing Dynasty’s politics,economy,and culture on the pattern.On the basis of summarizing the evolution of its formal language,it concludes the developmental characteristics of the Tuanshou pattern in the Qing Dynasty.Then,combining with the analysis of decoration techniques in the four manual crafts that were most popular for Tuanshou pattern in the Qing Dynasty,namely porcelain,lacquerware,enamelware,and weaving and embroidery,this article explores the interrelationship between its formal composition and craftsmanship techniques,illustrating a process where aesthetic ideals are realized and elevated through artistic carriers reflecting real life.In addition,by means of the research methods of semiotics,imageology,folklore studies,and cultural anthropology,this article analyzes the concrete nature and characteristics of the Tuanshou pattern’s decorative form and its influence on decorative arts in the prosperous era of the Qing Dynasty from various perspectives,such as the inheritance of patterns from former dynasties,the dominance of aristocratic aesthetic tastes,traditional mental models that favor roundness,as well as the prevalence of the practice of praying for longevity.This article also delves into the cultural connotations of the unified longevity pattern,pointing out that it reflects the pursuit of auspiciousness in Qing society and presents the Chinese traditional cultural ideal of longevity,reunion,and happiness.Finally,this article summarizes the spread and influence of the Tuanshou pattern in other countries and its value and significance for contemporary life,and puts forward thoughts on the sustainable development of traditional Chinese patterns.Through the study of the formal language of Tuanshou pattern in the Qing Dynasty,it is found that it is a decorative pattern with high aesthetic and cultural values,not only highlighting the essence and unique charm of traditional Chinese culture but also a precious symbol of cultural heritage.Tuanshou pattern is an indispensable part of decorative arts,directly or indirectly influenced by people’s customs,aesthetic habits,and spiritual pursuits.However,its formal language continues to undergo diverse evolution and has always been carried on.In contemporary design,we should innovate and apply the elements of Chinese traditional culture in our compositional approaches so that the decorative pattern of Tuanshou can emit new charms in new contexts. |
