A Report On The Translation Of HFTS-2 Completions Design And State-of-Art Diagnostics Results

Petroleum,the second biggest industry in national economy development and an important strategic resource for a country,plays an irreplaceable role in international exchanges and cooperation.Over these years,China tends to have an increasing degree of dependence on foreign petroleum.High-quality translations of petroleum engineering texts will provide help for the improvement and enhancement of the strategic position of China’s petroleum industry.Based on the translation of the conference paper titled HFTS-2 Completions Design and State-of-the-Art Diagnostics Results,this report tries to explore the solutions to the translation problems guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory.The source text,as a Petroleum English text,undoubtedly belongs to informative text whose major functions and purposes are to accurately convey information of the source text.In the process of translation,there appeared various problems,especially large numbers of terminologies and long sentences.Functional equivalence theory is adopted in the discussion of these problems in that the theory stresses content and receptors’ response,which helps to make proper adjustments in selecting words meanings combined with specific contexts and rebuilding sentence structures based on Chinese expression habits.It is expected that this report will provide some references for future translations of petroleum texts.
