In 2020,renowned economist Li Daokui appeared on the show Yanglan One-on-One to offer insights into China’s economic outlook following the COVID-19 pandemic.During the interview,Li argued that the pandemic had disproportionately impacted the poor and predicted that the road to recovery would be long, lasting at least two to three years. He also proposed a strategy for doubling the size of China’s middle-income group. The interpreter provided consecutive interpretation of the first 50 minutes of the interview, which was then evaluated for quality using Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The interpreter used this framework to identify areas for improvement in the interpretation output. In this interpreting exercise, the interpreter encountered three major types of problems, including Chinese idioms, lexical ambiguity, and fuzzy logic.Idioms are typical examples of culture-load words. The interpreter can borrow English idioms and use paraphrasing to handle them.Although cultures are different, the situations encountered are often similar, and idioms created for specific situations can be equivalent. If there is no equivalent idiom in English, paraphrasing can be used instead. When encountering ambiguous vocabulary,it is necessary to clarify the specific meaning of the word in the context. The logic in Chinese is often hidden in the context rather than in the language itself,so the interpreter needs to reorganize the logic when encountering unclear logic. The core purpose of using the above methods is to achieve functional equivalence and to make the target language listener’s reaction as similar as possible to that of the source language listeners.According to the guiding principles of the functional equivalence theory, the interpreter revised and improved the rendition after completing the interpretation task. However, there are limitations in this paper due to the lack of interpreting experience and proficiency in theory application. The interpreter will continuously improve his interpretation skills and actively respond to future challenges that may arise during interpretation.
