A Report On The Simulated C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of "How We Should Define ’Monopoly’"

In recent years,the topic of anti-monopoly has heated up dramatically in China.In order to improve the understanding on China’s anti-monopoly policies,trends and related law enforcement,the author chooses a program named "How to define monopoly" as the simulated interpreting material and explores the solutions to the difficulties in interpreting under the guidance of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory.From a talk show about economics and law,the interpreting material involves plenty of professional terms and concepts,and also shows a distinct colloquial color.Some sentences have no subjects,some have more than one subject and the subjects of some other sentences seem illogical.Another problem is the repetition of words,which requires the interpreter to select and simplify key information under the pressure of time.In addition,the host and the guest used a lot of slang,common sayings,Chinese folk wisecracks,and some ancient Chinese.Besides,some sentences in the material have logical contradictions or logic fuzziness.After analysis,the author sums up four difficulties,including ambiguous subjects,culture-loaded expressions,semantic redundancy and logic fuzziness.Based on the Communicative Translation Theory,the author puts forward corresponding solutions:explicitation,a strategy to express information in the target language that is implicit in the original speech;free interpreting,conveying the meaning of the source information faithfully while breaking free from the constraints of source language forms;omission,removing redundant or repeated expressions;sentence restructuring,restructuring the sentences to make the interpreting smooth,clear and natural.In the spirit of the Communicative Translation Theory which seeks to arouse the same reaction in the target readers as that of the readers of the original,the interpreter should deal with the speech with appropriate skills based on a full understanding of the meaning of the speakers,striving to ensure that the interpreting is fluent and concise.
