A Report On E-C Translation Of Financial News In China Daily From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The source text for the translation report comprises nine pieces of English news,translated by the author during her internship at China Daily.It falls into the category of financial texts,characterized by the extensive use of financial terms,numbers and long sentences.Also,it follows the wording principles of accuracy,brevity and clarity.As the global economy emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic,the demand for financial translation has been increasing tremendously.Guided by the theory of functional equivalence,the author tries to use different translation methods and techniques to make the translation better from three levels:lexical,syntactic,and textual.At the lexical level,the author analyzes how to translate terms,numbers,abbreviations,metonymical words and nominal expressions to ensure accurate and professional wording.At the syntactic level,the author uses different translation skills on the translation of sentences,including word order adjustment,sentence segmentation and voice shift.At the textual level,different cases are analyzed from the perspective of cohesion and coherence,so as to keep the logic and connection.Through the translation practice,the author concludes that financial news translation needs to prioritize accuracy and clarity.The preferred translation strategy is domestication.Functional equivalence theory offers good applicability to financial text translation,despite the risk of losing figurative or cultural expressions of the source language.
