The present report is based on the author’s experience of simulated simultaneous interpreting for an episode of CCG Global Dialogue. On December 8,2022,the Center for China and Globalization(CCG),a Chinese non-governmental think tank, held a dialogue between Professor Stephen S.Roach,Senior Fellow at Yale University, and Dr.Wang Huiyao, the President of CCG,talking about “Changing Reality of China-US Relations: Its Global Impact and Future Development”.The author did simulated simultaneous interpreting for the dialogue under the guidance of the probability anticipation model,a theory raised by Ghelly V.Chernov, which helped the author make anticipation during interpreting and ease the burden of information processing, contributing to the success of the task. The probability anticipation model explains basic psycholinguistic mechanisms in simultaneous interpreting. In Chernov’s view, during interpreting, the interpreter will dynamically make probability anticipation of the development of the message as the source language discourse unfolds.Such mechanism can be ideally described as a multilevel model based on the hierarchy of speech levels, with each higher level containing more redundancy, which plays a key role in ensuring probability anticipation.According to Chernov, redundancy can be classified into two categories: objective redundancy and subjective redundancy. Objective redundancy refers to the iteration of message elements and their interdependence, with the former including semantic agreement and co-reference and the latter including semantic government and contextual semantic constraints.Subjective redundancy is based on four kinds of inference about implicit messages: linguistic inference, cognitive inference, situational inference and pragmatic inference.Based on Chernov’s classification of redundancy, the author analyzed specific cases in her interpreting task and drew the following conclusions: first, objective redundancy helps to make anticipation on the linguistic level, such as anticipating reappeared semes and interdependent elements, therefore making it possible for the interpreter to compress words and expressions or to eliminate polysemy in the source language;second, subjective redundancy allows the interpreter to anticipate the content of communication in a broader sense,so the interpreter should have enough knowledge stored in mind in order to draw different kinds of inferences and create subjective redundancy. As a result, the present report suggests that interpreters should attach great importance to language competence and pre-task preparation so as to make better use of redundancy and achieve better performance in simultaneous interpreting. |
