Jia Pingwa,a representative in the literary world,is one of the most creative novelist and essayist in contemporary China. Most of his works showcase a strong native flavor and cultural sense.Happy Dreams, translated by British sinologist Nicky Harman, has attracted wide attention from domestic and foreign scholars. This thesis takes Happy Dreams as an example to probe into the manifestation of translator-centeredness by analyzing words and sentences characterized with native flavor and cultural sense.Firstly, factors such as personal language ability, cultural vision, and fondness for Chinese literary works contribute to the translator’s selection of Happy Dreams.Secondly, the translator gives full play to her initiative and creativity to grasp the meaning of dialects with context clues and to make the sentences logical and cohesive by adding certain sentence constituents to maintain the style of casual dialogues in the target language. Finally, the translator applies literal translation, liberal translation, addition, omission etc.in the translation of Chinese idioms and allusions. The translator also adopts multiple translation skills and techniques to lower the degree of insult, and to emphasize emotions of the speakers. With regard to the names and appellations, the translator captures typical features of the characters in the original book, which helps the characterization of the characters in the English version of the book.
