| The translation task in this report is extracted from the book India: the Road to Self-government,written by British scholar John·Coatman and published in 1942.As a historical text, the book shows that India moved towards self-government by breaking away from British control from the perspectives of politics, religion, parties, and so on.Nearly 15 thousand vocabularies from chapter seventh to chapter tenth in the book were chosen as the source text.As India has been a neighbor of China, this translation practice aims to provide a Chinese text about Indian history for domestic readers to enhance their understanding of Indian history by learning about the Indian path to self-government and even to strengthen China-Indian people-to-people exchanges. The source text, with accurate expression, delivers information about the hard times of Indians in the journey towards self-government.Based on the factors mentioned above,it shows the informative function of language while sharing expressive features. The text represents a series of historical events chronologically and is organized logically with identifiable cohesive ties. Thus, under the guidance of the cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan, this report analyzes the Chinese translation process of the source text in grammatical, lexical and contextual cohesion.Regarding grammar and lexical cohesion, the similarities and differences in cohesion between Chinese and English are analyzed, and the non-structural cohesion is restructured in the target text by translation skills like preservation, omission and rearrangement. In contextual cohesion, main points are put on textual meaning identification based on cultural and linguistic context to rebuild textual cohesion.Through this translation practice, the translator not only acquires knowledge about contemporary Indian history and the cohesion theory, but also studies the feasibility of the cohesion theory in guiding historical text translation. It is a valuable experience for the translator to translate the source text and write this translation report.Additionally,it is hoped that this report can be a reference for other translators who work on historical text translation. |
