As an integral part,the translation of Chinese poetics culture is essential in communicating Chinese culture.However,this is quite a challenging task which requires the translator to give priority to a thorough comprehension of the source text.Not only must the readability and acceptability of the target text for the readers be considered,but also the objective of bolstering our cultural confidence and effectively communicating Chinese stories needs to be achieved.The content selected for this translation practice is the first eight characters of the book Contradistinction and Integration: Comparative Poetics between China and the West,an academic monograph in China’s comparative literature field.The report is structured by comprehension,expression,and adaptation in accordance with the theory of thick translation,assessing particular problems and proposing relevant solutions.Firstly,the translator relies mostly on the context and parallel text to correctly comprehend terminology,proper nouns,and four-character phrases in order to preserve the academic and professional tone of the source text;Secondly,the translator returns the foreign concept to its original form,reorganizes the structure of sentences without grammatical rules in ancient Chinese and modern Chinese in order to convey the sentence’s core meaning,and strives to make the structure of the translation clear and concise;Finally,the translator modifies the wording of metaphors and historical events to improve the readability of the translation. |
