Manipulation In News Transediting

When transediting news written in a foreign language,Chinese media organizations would select its source carefully and edit the wording.Softening on or deletion of certain expressions may be necessary for publication.In this case,Lefevere’s manipulation theory points out the factors affecting the modification of the translated work and helps translators to avoid or use such elements to ensure the transedited text express the will of the agency.Although Lefevere’s manipulation theory is developed from literary translation,one of its important features is that it marks out the influence of both textual and non-textual factors on the translation.It is for this reason that the theory can also be used to analyze news,and Reference News,which is a Chinese media that compiles foreign news,is a good source of material for studying the theory.This paper will find cases from Reference News from the perspectives of poetics,ideology and patronage to vindicate the manipulation theory.Regarding poetics,this paper focuses on the shifts between nouns and verbs,active and passive voices and rhetorical additions and reservations.As for ideology,it studies the rewriting of political sensitive words,the selection of contents and the rewriting of titles.Regarding patronage,it presents how Reference News avoids competition and ensures its ideological correctness.In a word,the paper explores changes the translators make to the original text under the manipulation of three factors and finds out that the translated texts are accepted by the audience.
