A Critical Commentary On The E-C Translation Of Achieving Peace:Chimpanzees

This is a translation practical report,and this translation material is selected from the American author Carl Safina’s BECOMING WILD: How Animal Cultures Raise Families,Create Beauty,and Achieve Peace.And the translator translates the third chapter of the book-Achieving Peace-Chimpanzees.In the vast forest,there are countless creatures,including the chimpanzees that have traveled with us so far in this planet.Their society is dominated by males,whose ambition in turn brings with it all sorts of trouble for themselves as a result of power struggles.As the animals most similar to humans,they will decide who to align themselves with based on their needs.And they have a preference for peace within a penchant for war,breeding for generations to achieve peace in their unique way.This translation report is composed of four parts.The first part begins with some brief introductions to the book to be translated and the author of the book,analyzes the main contents and linguistic features of the material,and briefly introduces the background and significance of this translation practice.Then the second part introduces the guiding theory of this translation practice,namely Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Based on Nida’s functional equivalence,Part Three analyzes how the translator dealt with the key difficulties encountered in this translation practice by adopting some translation techniques in translating chapter 3 of Becoming Wild,mainly analyzing the six translation approaches adopted in the practice,including semantic extension,turning phrases into clauses,repetition,omission,following the original syntactical order and addition.Part Four concludes the whole translation report and summarizes the contribution and usefulness of this report.Functional equivalence translation theory provides the translator with more flexible translation strategies to make the translation similar to the original text which has the same purpose with Nida so that the translator is more comfortable in dealing with the difficulties in the translation,and does not have to be bound to the various original language sequences and sentence patterns,so the translation has more room for modification and adjustment.In addition,the translator needs to do a lot of work of revision and improvement with professional skills and knowledge in order to achieve the effects at most.
