This translation practice is selected from The Development of Modern China’s Economics: A Research on the Dissertation of Chinese Overseas Students, which systematically introduces academic economic thoughts of modern Chinese overseas students. The translator translated Chapter 10,Section 3 and Section 4,which are Chen Chen Han’s The Location of the Cotton-Manufacturing Industry in the United States,1880-1910 and Yang Lien-Sheng’s Notes on the Economic History of the Chin Dynasty.Under the guidance of “Comprehension,Expression,Adaptation”(CEA)analytical framework proposed by Li Changshuan, the translator divided the problems encountered in the translation process into three categories: comprehension, expression, and adaptation. The comprehension problems include culture and context aspects. The culture aspect involves a large number of titles of books, the specialist terms and classical Chinese sentences in the original text, which hinders the translator from understanding the meaning accurately. The translator successfully solved this problem by scouting relevant papers, audio and video materials, and graphic materials on the Internet.Another reason leading to the misunderstanding of the original text is that the translator focused more on the single sentences rather than the context. The solution is to search for the relevant information and sort out the logic of the whole text.In terms of expression, problems can be divided into three categories: inaccurate words, redundant expression and the lack of coherence. In order to pick accurate words, the translator adopted the methods such as looking up synonym dictionary, rereading the original text and adopting free translation method. The solution for redundant expression is to be concrete not abstract, use verbs not nouns and keep the expression short and simple. The solution for achieving coherence is to sort out the logic and adjust the order of words. In terms of adaptation, the translator mainly adopts two translation techniques:annotation and omission. The annotation is used because the main content of the original text is the modern economic history in which some expressions are different from the current era.Omitting the repetition of the original text can help the target readers better understand what the original text conveys.Through this translation practice, the translator realized that when translating academic economic text,it is necessary to pay equal attention to both culture and context aspects;when expressing,it is vital to fully consider the writing rules of the target language;when adapting,it is important to consider the feelings of target readers and convey information through annotation or omission. Finally, the translator hopes that this translation report can provide new sights for someone that wants to translate academic economic text.
