This paper is a translation practice report on Chapter 1 of Dance,Modernity and Culture: Explorations in the Sociology of Dance. The translation of this text can help Chinese readers, especially dance majors and their instructors, have a better understanding on American modern dance, and it has certain value for our studies. The purposes of this translation practice are to preserve the information and writing style of the source text at all possible and produce a similar reading experience between the target readers and the original readers. It coincides with Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator uses some effective translation methods and strategies, resolves various problems in the translation, achieves the equivalence of Chinese and English on the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. On the lexical level, the translator uses several methods like annotation, transliteration, amplification, omission and conversion. On the syntactic level,English word order or sentence structure has been properly adjusted to make the translated text conforming to the grammatical rules of Chinese. On the textual level, cohesion and coherence have been noticed, and then an intelligible text will be provided for Chinese readers.By participating in the translation practice, the translator has learned more knowledge of translation on dance cultures, and he hopes that this report can offer some references and suggestions to those translators who have interests in English texts on dance(or dance cultures).
