The sketches or booklets that teachers demonstrate for their students during the teaching process are called lesson drafts. They play a crucial role in traditional Chinese apprenticeship education and the teaching of landscape painting today, providing a good model for those learning to paint and playing an irreplaceable role in understanding the artistic patterns and connotations of traditional Chinese painting. In the twentieth century, with the introduction of Western culture, the form of teaching Chinese painting evolved from the former teacher-apprentice system to the academy system.Lu Yanshao’s teaching ideology is centered on the importance and inheritance of the cultural characteristics of his people, the pursuit of mood and rhythm in traditional Chinese ink painting, and the need for a specific cultural literacy in the painter, all of which are reflected in Lu’s works. This paper takes Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts as the object of study and analyses them in four main sections.Firstly,an overview of Lu Yanshao’s life is given. The background to the formation of Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts is analyzed, and the various versions of Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts are sorted out.In the twentieth century, the Chinese painting world was influenced by Western art ideas, and the traditional apprenticeship system was gradually transformed into modern classroom education.Lu Yanshao not only has experience of teaching apprentices in a private form but also has teaching experience in painting academies, youth palaces and other places. He has rich teaching experience, and he drew a large number of lesson drafts during the teaching period. We can now see that Lu Yanshao has completed at least five sets of lesson drafts for landscape lessons, with a total of more than 400 pieces.Secondly,a summary of Lu Yanshao’s mastery and artistic characteristics of landscape painting is presented, with an study of the painting techniques of grass, trees, rocks, clouds and water, brushwork and ink, combined with Lu Yanshao’s painting theories.Lu Yanshao’s landscape paintings have created a unique style that is both rooted in Chinese tradition and full of modernity. In the lesson drafts,Lu gave detailed demonstrations and explanations of painting methods such as tree stones and clouds and water, with rich pictures and texts.Once again, the more representative drafts of Gong Hanqian’s lesson drafts, the Mustard Seed Garden, and the drafts of Gu Kunbo,a famous painter of the same era,are selected as references and compared with Lu Yanshao’s drafts to identify the personal characteristics of Lu’s apprenticeship. Finally, the author attempts to analyze and judge the painting ideas contained in Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts.Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts include aspects of the tree method, the stone method, the cloud and water method, and the sketching drafts. The arrangement of the drafts is comprehensive, systematic, and progressive, with a certain degree of scientificity, making it easy for beginners to summarise and learn. This essay aims to analyze the background to the formation of the drafts, the structure of their content, the meaning of the brush and ink,and the teaching ideas. It also aims to explore the personal characteristics of Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts by comparing them with those of other painters. It also analyses the role and influence of Lu Yanshao’s lesson drafts on the creation, sketching, and teaching of Chinese landscape painting.
