A Study On English Translation Of Culture-Loaded Terms In The My People,My Country Series From The Perspective Of Three-Dimensional Transformations

In today’s world,cultures are intermingling,and political and economic developments are driving the spread of culture from one country to another.Films and television works are playing a fundamental role in cultural transmission,and subtitles serve as a bridge between the two cultures.As China’s economy continues to develop and its comprehensive strength grows,the Chinese film industry is also progressing,but the box office abroad is not ideal.Cultural differences are one of the reasons.Subtitling plays an increasingly important role in promoting international and cultural exchanges.In this process,translating culture-loaded terms is undoubtedly one of the most challenging tasks.A culture-loaded term is a phrase or word with a specific cultural meaning,which is closely related to the culture,history,or geography of a country.Translating words loaded with culture requires the translator to understand the cultural background of recipients speaking the target language(TL)on the one hand,and to pay attention to the characteristics of the local culture on the other hand.In addition,subtitle translation of culture-loaded terms also requires translators to take into account the constraints of subtitle translation,including time constraints and spatial constraints,and to translate the source language(SL)to the extent as much as possible within a limited scope,crossing the gap between different languages and cultures.In the light of the above background and based on the theory of eco-translatology,this thesis presents a case study of the films My People,My Country,My People,My Homeland,and My Country,My Parents,as well as the culture-loaded terms in them.Eco-translatology,put forward by Hu Gengshen,looks at translation through an ecological perspective and believes that in the translation process,translators translate the SL and make the transformations in three main dimensions,namely,the linguistic,communicative,and cultural dimensions.Firstly,the three films were observed from the perspective of translational eco-environment and then under the guidance of Nida’s cultural classification(Nida,2004:110),the culture-loaded terms were subdivided in the context of the films.The English subtitles were analyzed from three main dimensions,and the corresponding translation strategies were summarized.Based on the three-dimensional transformations,the following conclusions have been drawn.Considering the limitations of subtitles and cultural concepts in the films,the translators of the films have made adaptive transformations in the cultural,linguistic,and communicative dimensions to some extent,and chosen different translation strategies for specific situations.Literal translation,free translation,and transliteration plus literal translation were the frequently used,and reduction,addition and borrowing also played an important role in translating culture-loaded terms and communicating.In this study,theoretically,the feasibility of applying the new theory,eco-translatology,on studying the subtitle translation of culture-loaded terms is demonstrated.Practically,the translation strategies of subtitling culture-loaded terms are illustrated.Through this new theory of eco-translatology,the author hopes to provide new ideas for the subtitle translation of culture-loaded terms as well as some insights for future research.
