| This is a practice report on the mock Chinese-English consecutive interpreting from the perspective of the Interpretive Theory. The interpreter selected the remarks by Premier Li Keqiang at the national teleconference themed “by deepening the reform to streamline administration and delegate power, improve regulation, and upgrade services” as a case study.Through the mock Chinese-English interpreting, the interpreter found that there are three significant problems when delivering this type of interpreting: first, interpreters should be familiar with the background knowledge of national economic policies;Second, the expressions with Chinese characteristics are various;Third, the information is dense and massive, which poses a grave challenge to interpreters.Through pre-interpreting preparation and interpreting training, the interpreter’s ability to deal with the first and third challenges can be improved, but there is still a long way to go for the second one. This report focuses on the second challenge. In order to solve the problem, the interpreter systematically studied the interpreting theory and adopted specific interpreting skills, namely paraphrasing and omission.Through analysis, the author found that it is more appropriate to use deverbalization to decode the messages of the source language,to convey the meaning rather than the words, which is in line with the basic communicative function of interpreting and the Interpretive Theory. At the same time, the interpreter also put forward some suggestions for fellow interpreters who might encounter similar,if not identical, difficulties. This type of consecutive interpreting not only tests the interpreter’s basic linguistic competence and extensive economic policy background knowledge, but also the interpreter’s psychological quality and flexible responsibility.Important and difficult expressions with the Chinese characteristics discussed in the report can be solved through deverbalization. It is hoped that this can be some guidance and help to fellow interpreters. |
