Report Of The Influence Of Accents On Interpretation And Corresponding Strategies

As the globalization deepens around the world,English has gradually become the world’s lingua franca,a shared language,and been widely used in cultural communication and international economic cooperation.However,as more and more people,including businessmen,policy-makers,and national leaders,make attempts to learn English,the impact of their native tongues is unavoidable.Therefore,during interpretation,both consecutive interpretation(hereinafter abbreviated as CI)and simultaneous interpretation(hereinafter abbreviated as SI),the accents of speakers will add a great amount of pressure to interpreters,hence their performance.Therefore,the understanding of the impact of accent on interpretation and the corresponding strategies to solve relevant problems during interpreting is of great significance.On July 23rd,2019,the author was invited to provide CI services for the "The Pre-Shipment Inspection and Conference Identification&Detection System Meeting".During the meeting,the author has found very strong accents of the delegates from Jinan SYRIS Electronic Technology Co.,and of the delegates from the government of The Republic of Uganda.Not having expected this before,the author strained every sinew to collect as much important information as possible.After having done a great job of CI,the author has made reflections on the whole interpretation process several times,and summarized strategies to solve similar problems concerning accents based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model.The report has 5 chapters:Chapter 1,Introduction,which gives a brief introduction to the report and the background.Chapter 2 gives a brief description of the meeting,the participants and the task of the author.Chapter 3 makes an overview of Daniel Gile’s Effort Models and an analysis of the problems during the Meeting using the Effort Models.Chapter 4 provides some strategies to deal with the accent problems during interpretation based on the author’s own experience.Chapter 5 is the conclusion of the report.Normally,accented English has a negative impact on the performance of interpreters,and the problems the author has come across are common across different interpretation tasks in various scenarios.Therefore,the strategies summarized in this paper can provide some illumination for other interpreters who have had such problems or interpreting learners who aspire to be master interpreters.
