Application Of The Adaptation Theory In Academic Text Translation

Academic text is objective, professional, logical and creative. Its language is precise and plain, and its structure is distinct with lots of nominal structures, passive sentences and long difficult sentences. According to the Adaptation Theory by Verschueren, in order to meet the goal of successful communication, the adaptability of language is to choose appropriate words to meet the requirements of communication. The translation material of this paper is typically academic text. To conform the usage of the target language and faithfully express the original text, this paper uses the adaptation theory to guide the translation and solve problems caused by the differences between English and Chinese language. The paper concludes that the adaptation theory can guide the translation of academic text effectively from four angles:contextual correlates, language structural, dynamic and salience.
