The source text of this translation practice report is extracted from Professor Tang Hong’s Cultural Interaction and Integration Between Ancient Ba-Shu and South Asia which introduces the cultural interaction and integration between the ancient Sichuan region and South Asia through the Silk Road, involving material culture, religious culture, language, literature and so on.Against the continuous development of the Belt and Road construction, this translation aims to let English readers understand the foreign exchange and dissemination of Ba-Shu culture since ancient times,to promote the research on Ba-Shu culture and further its exchange abroad. The translation practice covers the preface and introduction part of the book, including an overview of Ba-Shu and Ba-Shu culture, and an overview of the research on the Southern Silk Road. This translation practice is a historical document with mainly informative text, and there are many long sentences,non-subject sentences and complex words related to archaeology. In order to solve the difficulties of this translation and improve the faithfulness and acceptability of the translation, the translator chooses Functional Equivalence Theory as the guiding theory. The thesis explores the translation methods and technics of the historical informative text from these three aspects of lexical, syntactic and textual equivalence. It is explored that when translating the historical informative text, the translator mainly adopts the translation method of literal translation for culture-loaded words, using the translation techniques of transliteration, annotation, restructuring and so on;when the cultural connotation of culture-loaded words cannot be conveyed by literal translation, the translator adopts the translation method of liberal translation. At the syntactic level, the translator adopts the translation method of literal translation, using the translation techniques of division, omission, and restructuring. At the textual level, this thesis analyzes cohesion and coherence, with cohesive devices including ellipsis, reference, and conjunction, and with case study on how to achieve coherence in the text. This project has important practical significance in accurately reproducing the information of the original text and improving the quality of the translated texts. It has reference meaning for the practice of Chinese-English translation on the informative texts. In addition,it is of practical significance in promoting the “going out” of Ba-Shu culture.
