The report concerns the Chinese-English(C-E)translation of pages 1 to 46 of Lu Shuming’s I Meet Lord Guan Yu and evaluates the three equivalence relationships between English and Chinese under the guidance of Koller’s equivalence theory. The report focuses on the comparison of the two translated versions in order to resolve the ambiguity and incoherence in C-E translation by applying different translation methods. Therefore,it is essential for a translator to strive for denotative, connotative, and pragmatic equivalence in the source and target text to produce a better version. The report basically consists of six main sections: the first section provides a brief introduction to the translation report;the second section summarizes the source text and the translation project;the third section outlines the three phases: before translation, during translation, and post translation;the fourth section analyses the core contents of equivalence concept in western and Koller’s translation equivalence theory;the fifth section applies the Koller’s equivalence to the English translation of I Met Lord Guan Yu,so as to explore translation strategies and methods that can guide the English translation of biographies;the last section summarizes the theoretical guidance and practical value of Koller’s equivalence to biographical material. The report suggests that different translation methods should be adopted to achieve one-to-one,one-to-many,and one-to-zero equivalence in the translation practice under the guidance of translation equivalence theory. In this way,the report could achieve connotative equivalence or similarities in English with common Chinese names, idioms and phrases, thus leading to explore the Chinese adaptation to English pragmatic features in vocabulary, syntax and culture. To achieve an accurate and coherent translation from Chinese to English,a translator must have a good understanding of both languages.Admittedly, only when a translator acquires professional knowledge can one translate from Chinese to English based on literal translation, paraphrase, transliteration, amplification, borrowing and other translation methods or skills. In order to effectively translate the text and make it readable and flow naturally, the translation of the source text must ensure denotative, connotative and pragmatic equivalence.
