As the saying goes,“grain is the paramount necessity of the people”.Grain terminologies are the key words and phrases collectively reflecting the professional concepts in the domains of grain research, production, processing, storage and so on.As an important branch of terminological and translation studies, the English translation of those terminologies is an indispensable channel bridging the Sino-Western exchange and cooperation in grain research and food safety on the one hand;and broadcasting overseas the Chinese-unique techniques as well as experience in grain processing on the other. The seemingly crucial subject, however,is subjected to rare academic consideration and therefore calls for a research necessity. This thesis attempts to construct the grain terminology Chinese-English parallel corpora of 50,000 bilingual terms and carry out the contrastive analysis between Chinese terminologies and their English translations from morphological, semantic and pragmatic perspectives within Russian terminologist Crinev’s three dimension regulations for terminology.Besides, the reference corpora including the UN terminology database,Collins and Oxford dictionaries along with COCA have been created to approach the translated English sample terms regarding their wordings, meanings, collocations and contexts.Based on above surveys and findings, the thesis goes on to suggest available principles and methods accounting for the English translation of grain terminologies. The study indicates the three-dimension principles that terminology translations should be morphologically conventional and stable.Semantically, they are supposed to be definite, unique and complete.Pragmatically, the translations are required to follow the principle of internationality and at the same time preserve the culture-specificity for a sound overseas transmission of Chinese terminologies.Under those principles,a series of methods have been suggested: add hyphens correctly to the translations of affixed terminologies, unify the translations of the same root in compound terminologies, translate literally based on a professional terminological cognition, translate adequately the meaning of source components, exclude inaccurate versions through online native English corpus, borrow the globally-standardized expressions and transliterate culture-loaded grain products with connotations. The study is designed to improve the current translations and contribute methodologically to the global grain research cooperation and overseas teaching. |
