This report is based on a mock consecutive interpreting of an impromptu speech by Mr Shan Jixiang at the 19 th Annual Meeting of the Yabuli Youth Entrepreneurs Forum, which mainly introduced the reform measures the Forbidden City took in the past few decades and the tremendous changes brought about by them. The original speech lasted 54 minutes, and the total length of the mock interpreting is 142 minutes. This type of speech helped to promote traditional Chinese culture to the world and enhanced the cultural confidence of Chinese people. The source language was an impromptu speech based on Power Point presentations. As a speech mode, impromptu speech is widespread in international conferences, round table discussions, news interviews, and other occasions.Since the speaker does not prepare a written version when speaking,an impromptu speech has the features of excessive colloquial expression, semantic gap,and loose structure, which affect the interpreter’s energy allocation, resulting in specific difficulties in interpreting activities. The interpreter believed that using Gile’s effort model to guide and classify the above-influencing factors can well integrate the energy allocation among source language input,short-term memory, and target language output. The interpreter had comprehensively adopted several interpreting methods such as free translation, deletion, and adding linking words to cope with different influencing factors, significantly alleviating the pressure caused by an energy imbalance and helping the interpreter allocate the energy reasonably. This has specific positive significance for improving interpreters’ analytical ability, controlling the interpreting scene, and improving interpreting quality. |
