Short-term elementary oral learners attach great importance to their oral expression ability and are eager to see the effect of language learning. As the firsthand learning materials for short-term primary oral learners, textbooks play an important role in the process of improving oral expression. As an important part of the textbook, the arrangement of the exercises in the textbook will affect the learners’ oral learning effect to a certain extent. At present, the quantity and quality of short-term elementary spoken Chinese textbooks are far from meeting the market demand. It takes time to release new teaching materials. In order to solve the urgent need,it is imperative to inherit and extend the excellent writing tradition of the original classic teaching materials. This study takes five sets of short-term elementary spoken Chinese textbooks that are representative in the development of short-term spoken Chinese teaching,namely,“900 Sentences in Spoken Chinese”,“Conversational Chinese 301”,“ShortTerm Spoken Chinese”,“Road” and “360 Standard Sentences in Chinese Conversation” as the objects, the paper is divided into five parts: Chapter 1 sorts out the relevant research theories and achievements, identifies the research content, ideas, and methods, and provides theoretical support and methodological guidance for the research.Chapter 2 makes a representative description and brief introduction of the five sets of textbooks, and presents the arrangement of the internal and external forms of exercises in the overall structure of the textbooks. The research finds that it is necessary to pay attention to the relevance of the external forms of exercises, and try“layered” arrangements. The internal forms focus on the connection between exercises and themes, and the internal connections of each exercise, emphasizing cooperative learning.Chapter 3 presents a statistical analysis of the amount and type of exercises in the five sets of textbooks. The study finds that the number of exercises in textbooks should be “concise and precise”,and the total number of exercises should be controlled at about 20,with the “main” exercises’ type being communicative and the “secondary” exercises’ type being diversified.Chapter 4 examines the arrangement of exercises in four aspects: phonetic exercises, vocabulary and sentence exercises, conversation exercises, and paragraph expression exercises. The research finds that it is necessary to pay attention to a certain practice program,a single presentation of conversation rules, and stage differences, etc.Taking into account the findings of the above study, the research results of previous exercises, and the characteristics of the lesson types,Chapter 5 summarizes the features of the five sets of textbook exercises in terms of internal and external forms, the amount of exercises, the types of exercises, and the contents of the exercises,so as to put forward three pedagogical reflections to help teachers better use the textbook exercises. This study summarizes the excellent writing traditions utilized in the practice arrangement of short-term primary oral Chinese textbooks, and provides valuable insights for the subsequent compilation of similar textbooks.Additionally,it offers practical ideas for teachers to maximize the effectiveness of their instruction, thereby promoting the development of future textbooks in this genre.
