Based on the principles of linguistic simplicity and economy,the verb reduplication can be used to express grammatical meanings such as a short period of time and tiny quantities without creating new words,and has the pragmatic function of euphemism,which enhances the use benefit of language.Verb reduplication is a grammatical item that foreign students begin to acquire at the primary level,and is a common linguistic phenomenon in spoken Chinese.The simple form and complex usage of verb reduplication makes it more difficult to acquire,so it is necessary to conduct a special study on the acquisition of verb reduplication.Based on statistical analysis,this paper analyses the use of verb reduplication in the interlanguage corpus,teaching materials and tests,with a view to exploring teachers’ teaching strategies for verb reduplication and improving the acquisition effect of verb reduplication.The introductory section explains the origin and significance of verb reduplication research,reviews the current status of ontology research on verb reduplication and the current status of international Chinese teaching research,and introduces the research content,research methods and sources of the language materials.The first chapter is devoted to the ontological theory of verb reduplication,and discusses the syntactic,semantic and pragmatic aspects of verb reduplication with example sentences from the CCL corpus.The syntactic aspect focuses on the syntactic constraints of verb reduplication,such as the syntactic constraints on verb reduplication as the attribute,and the syntactic constraints on verb reduplication with the object.The semantic aspect explains the different grammatical meanings of verb reduplication in specific contexts,e.g.a short period of time and tiny quantities.The pragmatic aspect describes the pragmatic functions of verb reduplication in oral communication,e.g.verb reduplication expresses euphemistic meaning and can express the speaker’s suggestions and requests in interpersonal communication.The second chapter selects overlappable verbs in the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education according to their lexical characteristics,and provides example words for the retrieval of verb reduplication in the interlanguage corpus.The frequency of the six forms of verb reduplication in the interlanguage corpus were compiled with reference to the overlappable verbs in the Grading Standards,and the correct and incorrect use of the verb reduplication by foreign students was investigated comprehensively.After analysing the data on the use of the verb reduplication,this paper analyses three aspects of errors in the corpus: syntax,semantics and pragmatics,and presents the proportion of errors in each aspect in the form of data.In the interlanguage corpus,the proportion of international students’ error types is: syntactic errors>semantic errors>pragmatic errors.After analysing the types of errors,the reasons for the above errors are explained.In the third chapter,using the textbooks of HSK Standard Course 1-6 as the object of textbook analysis,we analyse the arrangement of verb reduplication in the series,i.e.the situation of recurrence,the situation of grammatical explanation and the situation of grammatical practice.In the section on recurrence,the frequency of verb reduplication in the textbooks is counted and the overlappable verbs in the textbooks are summarised.The overlappable verbs in the textbooks are compared with the list of overlappable verbs in the Grading Standard to explore the grade distribution of overlappable verbs in the HSK Standard Course.In the section on grammar explanation and grammar exercises,the features and problems of the arrangement of the verb reduplication in the textbooks are systematically discussed,and suggestions for grammar explanation and grammar exercises on textbooks’ arrangement.In the fourth chapter,a pre-test is conducted to investigate the acquisition of the verb reduplication by students before teaching.Based on the pre-test,the syntactic,semantic and pragmatic functions of the verb reduplication are taught.Due to space limitations,only example of instructional design for verb reduplication’s euphemism is shown in the paper.To test the teaching effects of verb reduplication,a post-test was administered to foreign students after the lecture.A chi-square test was conducted to analyse the errors of the pre-test and post-test and to analyse the statistical significance of the difference between the post-test and the pre-test,thus demonstrating the effectiveness of teaching.Combining the acquisition of foreign students and the in-class teaching of teachers,we make recommendations for verb reduplication in the classroom instruction.The concluding section summarises the main findings of the study and identifies room for improvement and refinement.
