With the rapid development of modern science and technology, artificial intelligence has been widely used in various fields, bringing potential crises while improving the quality of life. Therefore, the pros and cons of the development of AI has been a hot topic of discussion and research among experts and scholars in recent years. This report selects an article from The New Yorker entitled “The Doomsday Invention: Will Artificial Intelligence Bring Us Utopia or Destruction?” guided by Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory. The translator makes an analysis at the lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level from the perspective of translation. At the lexical level, literal translation, free translation and annotation are flexibly adopted; At the syntactic level, the translator mainly analyzes why she has to convert some passive voice into active voice, and for some complex sentences containing attributive clauses, the translator chooses the method of division to split and reorganize the sentences, and adjusts the order of sentences and processes nominal sentences to achieve syntactic equivalence; At the discourse level, literal translation, amplification and adjusting word order are adopted to achieve the equivalence between the discourse and style to meet the requirements of target readers.Through this translation practice, the translator is aware that translation practice guided by Functional Equivalence Theory can convey the information of the source text more accurately and meet the requirements of the readers. It is hoped that the translation report will be helpful to the translation of relevant science texts.
