A Report On The E-C Translation Of Justice And The Possibility Of Good Moralism In Bioethics Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Ethical issues are universal problems in human society and they are drawing more and more attention around the world nowadays.From cloning technology to human genetic selection,a wide range of ethical issues have been discussed at home and abroad.More specifically,some tragic incidents happening in our daily life recently have triggered heated discussions on the Internet such as doctor-patient disputes and randomly stabbing innocent people on the street.All of these social moral phenomena belong to ethics.In order to improve the awareness of ethics in our whole society,related social science works should be offered to the public for reference.As a translator,the translation of social science works can help promote the exchange of ideas between east and west.Hence,the translator selected ethical related paper as her translation material and wrote the translation report.This report is based on the author’s translation practice of Justice and the Possibility of Good Moralism in Bioethics published in the second issue of Medical Ethics in Cambridge Quarterly in 2019.In the process of translation,the translator encountered many difficulties,such as how to deal with terms,culture-loaded words at the lexical level;compound sentences,complex sentences and compound complex sentences at the syntactic level;and the cohesive expressions at the textual level.In view of the characteristics of academic papers in social science,the translator employed Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as the guiding theory.Under the guidance of this theory,the translator applied various strategies and techniques in her translation practice,such as literal translation,free translation,domestication,foreignization,addition,omission and repetition in order to achieve equivalence at different levelsIn addition,the writing of this report also inspired the translator’s reflection on her translation process.First of all,translation preparation is of great importance.The preparation of searching for the background information,management of time schedule,and the communication with the project manager should be processed appropriately.Secondly,the translator should pay more attention to the information conveyed of the source text during translation process.Thirdly,proofreading and reader’s feedback are essential to improve the translation work.
