During the Eastern Zhou period, along with the development and growth of the state of Chu,the population of Chu as a whole tended to grow, the family structure shifted towards nuclear or main families, and the structure of ethnic groups tended to become more complex. The population management of the state of Chu changed in response to the situation, with the unit of population statistics changing from soldier to household and the management system developing from a book and society system to a household registration system.Under the household registration system, the commoners were increasingly controlled by the state and had to be registered as household members, which was controlled by local administrative organizations at different levels. In addition,Chu made efforts to resettle the survivors of the destroyed state and to increase the population. As for the inclusion of women in the registry,it is believed that women were included in the registry because they had to be included in the statistics due to their tax obligations, while the Baoshan Bamboo slips "Collected Writings" and "Collected Words" were not official registry books and the surviving content is limited. At the same time,it is believed that the surnames of commoners were given on the basis of their place of origin, which facilitated the identification of individuals and the writing of names and official documents,a feature that distinguished Chu from other states and greatly facilitated population management. However,it should also be noted that it was not common to give surnames to common women and slaves, and the available historical data are almost untraceable, reflecting the low status of women. In conclusion, the changes in the population management system of Chu were related to the population growth and the complexity of the population composition, but also to meet the needs of warfare and social development of the great state,to facilitate taxation and exploitation,to provide soldiers for warfare,to maintain order and stability, and to provide a basis for the enforcement of laws.As a part of the state administration, the population management system of Chu was changing along with the local administrative system, population ties and family forms, which were interlinked and influenced each other, and promoted the development of Chu under the interaction.
