Abstract/Summary:
This report describes a simulated consecutive interpreting task on three speeches at the 2021 Sino-Norwegian Social Policy Forum, which has a theme of population aging and low fertility rate. The author summarizes major difficulties including culture-loaded and context-dependent words, incomplete and long sentences, and discourse redundancy at different extent. The Interpretive Theory emphasizes three steps in the process of interpreting, namely understanding,de-verbalization and re-expression.Under the guidance of this theory, the author adopts varied interpreting methods such as paraphrasing, concretization, division, amplification, omission and combination to overcome these difficulties at lexical level, syntactic level, and discourse level. In the reflection on this practice, the author finds that flexible use of methods and well preparation are helpful for realizing de-verbalization and conveying the meaning behind the language. The author believes that the application of Interpretive Theory is beneficial to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of interpretation. The theory is useful in guiding interpreters to perform well in interpreting.Based on the experience of this task, the author hopes to further improve her interpretation skills, and provide some references for other interpreters on related topics.
