A Report On Simulated Interpreting Of The Award Ceremony Of Touching China 2020

The practice report selected the Award Ceremony of Touching China 2020 as the simulated interpretation task.This task is demanding because it involves multiple topics and different language styles,with much of the content being complex and hard to be interpreted in such a way that it is easily accepted by the audience.The simulation identified major problems in three areas: language,culture,and rhetoric,which are involved with the aesthetic gap between the interpreter and the audience,and the expectation horizon and the subjectivity of the interpreter.With this in view,the interpreter applied the theory of Reception Aesthetics to ensure the quality of interpreting.Receptive Aesthetics,or reception theory,has its roots in philosophy.It holds that the function of a work needs to be realized in the audience,and the audience is the subject of the interpretation activity.The realization of the purpose of interpreting is closely related to the audience’s acceptance.To solve the three types of problems mentioned above,it is essential to process the source text and narrow the aesthetic gap through literal translation,free translation,omission and transcreation,and continuously adjust to the listeners’ expectation horizon effectively.For this purpose,it is advisable to use natural target language and fully convey the source text message.What is gained from this assignment are as follows: first,the Theory of Reception Aesthetics is conducive to interpreting because simultaneous interpreting is,by nature,subject to energy allocation and on-time task completion,hence occasionally neglecting the degree of acceptance of the message conveyed.Secondly,the Theory of Reception Aesthetics believes that the audience gives life to the work,and what counts in information transmission is the final understanding on the part of the audience.In this sense,what is most crucial for the interpreter is how to adjust to the audience’s expectation horizon and bridge the aesthetic gap.Finally,it has to be admitted that,in some cases,it is almost impossible to bring audience closer to the aesthetic taste of the source text.In view of the differences in cultural backgrounds,contexts and the characteristics of interpreting work,a certain aesthetic distance can be appropriately preserved.
