Daocheng Yading --The Last Shangrila --A Report On Simultaneous Interpreting Practice With Script

This is a report about simultaneous interpreting. The author choose Dacheng Yading-the last Shangrila, an advertising video, as interpreting material. The author has conducted this simultaneous interpreting practice from Chinese to English with script. In this report, the task process is described, analyzed and concluded. Skopos rule is the guiding principle in this report. By adopting the research method of analyzing, typical difficulties in Chinese to English interpreting with script are analyzed and classified, and feasible strategies to those difficulties appeared in the practice are also discussed.Firstly, the task background of this practice is introduced in the first chapter which includes the task type, task features, task contents, script features and research object and method. Secondly, the preparation before the interpreting practice, the conducting process and a brief summary of this task are discussed in the process chapter. Thirdly, skopos theory and skopos rule are introduced in the analysis chapter. The three mains difficulties in this practice are analyzed under the guidance of skopos rule, and accordingly feasible strategies are also discussed in this chapter. Finally, in the chapter of summary the weaknesses of this task, the experience summary, and the direction of future work and study are discussed.In this report, typical difficulties which have been selected from this task are analyzed under the guidance of skopos rule, and accordingly feasible strategies are also discussed in the chapter of analysis. According to skopos theory, what translation matters is the function of translation. It indicates translation should be more about the function, and less about the equality between the original and the translation. Meanwhile, translation object should be the deciding factor of translation methods and strategies. Through this Chinese to English Simultaneous interpreting practice, typical difficulties of simultaneous interpreting with script have been classified and analyzed based on skopos rule, and accordingly strategies have been summarized. Accordingly feasible strategies are as follows:1.Simplicity:In interpreting in order to avoid being tedious, the strategy of simplicity would be a good choice for interpreters. This kind of strategy can be divided into two ways:summarizing and omission.2.Adjustment:Due to language differences, syntactic linearity principle has its own limitations. In interpreting if syntactic linearity principle fail to work, interpreters should make up by adopting adjustment principle immediately in order to achieve fidelity and fluency.3.The strategy of selecting translation method:When meeting cultural vacancies, interpreters should try to avoid the equivalence of format, and take the acceptability of target readers and cultural differences into account. The method of foreignizing or domesticating would be adopted under the guidance of skopos rule.
