This translation practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of the fourth chapter of the social science text Beginnings and Beyond: Foundations in Early Childhood Education(Eighth Edition).The book is a multifaceted introduction to Western concepts of early childhood education.According to Newmark’s text typology,it is an informative text since it focuses on reader acceptance as well as facts and knowledge to convey information beyond language.The report employs Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation as its theoretical basis,combines problems encountered throughout the translation process,and summarizes translation skills and methods for informative text of social sciences by analyzing typical cases.While having different translation styles,semantic and communicative translation are still intimately linked.Under the guidance of semantic translation,the translator adopts translation methods and techniques such as literal translation,zero translation,transplantation of punctuation,and reproduction of specific fonts in the source text,which not only significantly improve the accuracy and fidelity of the translation but also preserve the linguistic form and unique writing style of the original author.Guided by communicative translation,the translator prioritizes the reading experience of the target readers and employs a variety of methods to achieve the communicative effect.The information in the source text is presented succinctly and clearly by omission,division,and reorganization of sentence structure;free translation,conversion,and amplification is used to make the translation more idiomatic and fluent.The translator finds that the flexible use of semantic and communicative translation can improve the accuracy and conciseness of the target text,make it easier to grasp for domestic readers,and fulfill the goal of communication while ensuring the faithfulness of the information.At the same time,the translator hopes this translation practice can provide experience and a reference for future translation of other similar texts. |
