A Report On The E-C Translation Of Fuzzy Language In Indonesia’s Foreign Policy And Grand Strategy In The 21st Century(Excerpt)

Language,an extremely complex,highly abstract system with unlimited wordformation ability,is overloaded with fuzziness,which inevitably poses many problems in translation.The meaning conveyed by social science texts is fuzzy due to its social and cultural context-dependent use.This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The selected translation text is the Introduction,Chapter One,Chapter Two and Chapter Three of an academic work entitled Indonesia’s Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy in the 21 st Century by Vibhanshu Shekhar.This project has rich value in interpreting Indonesia’s national strategy and realistic guiding significance to foreign geopolitical research.This thesis focuses on fuzzy language in the source text by analyzing such three levels as word,phrase and sentence.It explains how fuzzy language is used in different cases and how it can be translated from English into Chinese.In the process of translation,there are a large number of terms,professional vocabulary and policy names.In addition,the complex sentence structure of the source text causes fuzziness to a certain extent,which increases the difficulty of translation.Therefore,translators should first identify the fuzzy language in the source language,correctly understand it’s meaning with the help of the context,and better convey the original information by retaining fuzzy language,deleting vague expressions,adding detailed information,or making some changes to the fuzzy part in translation.It is suggested that translators,when dealing with fuzzy languages in social science texts,should first analyze the meaning of words in depth considering the context;Second,they should inquire about the cultural background to determine the meaning of words;Third,they should clarify the logic of the original text and adjust the Chinese word order;Fourth,they should make the expression normative and accurate,in line with the stylistic style.Hopefully,this report will enrich the research of the translation of fuzzy language in social science texts and contribute to the translation of similar texts.It is also expected to make a modest contribution to the fuzziness and translation studies.
