| This translation project is based on the OPEC’s official energy report in 2021,World Oil Outlook 2045.Consisting of nine chapters, the full text predicts the global trend of oil and other energy sources.Guided by communicative translation theory, the report chooses Chapter Two,Energy Demand as the source text, and makes an analysis of the translation of long sentences in energy reports.According to Newmark’s classification of text types, energy reports belong to informational texts, which focus on professionalism and readability. The communicative translation theory holds that when translating such texts, translators should focus on the target readers and make appropriate adjustments to the target text without being limited to the syntactic structure of the original text,so as to achieve the effective communication.Long sentences in the project consist of many professional terms with complex structures, and the expression of English is greatly different from Chinese.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, this translation report explores translation strategies of long sentences from three levels—information accuracy, structural clarity and expressional fluency.Combined with specific examples, this report analyzes the translation methods of long sentences in energy reports by adopting the methods of syntactic linearity,inserting,cutting,splitting-off,reversing and recasting.Based on translation practice, the report considers that the guiding role of communicative translation theory in the translation of long sentences in the energy report is mainly reflected in three aspects. It is found that in terms of information accuracy, the translator should pay attention to the authenticity of the content, using methods of syntactic linearity and insertion to retain the complete information. In terms of structural clarity, the translator should focus on the logic of the article, clarifying the sentence structure by cutting and splitting-off.In terms of expressional fluency, the translator should concentrate on idiomatic expressions of the target language, breaking original grammatic limitations by reversing and recasting to achieve equivalence as much as possible. The report solves the difficulties encountered in translation practice with multiple methods, hoping to provide new views and shed light on further translations of energy report. |
