| In recent years, with the increasing ageing of China, the problem of depression among the elderly has become more and more prominent, causing much pressure on the elderly themselves, their families and society. In this context, depression among the elderly is a growing concern for society in general. As low-vision older people are a more vulnerable group of older people, they are more likely to suffer from depression and therefore need to be given adequate attention in the process of studying and addressing depression in older people.Low vision is an important factor contributing to depression in older people. In this paper,a social work case service was conducted under the guidance of narrative therapy theory, using depressed elderly people with low vision as the research target. In the process, based on observations and interviews with depressed elderly people with low vision,it was found that low vision seriously affects their self-confidence,causing them to gradually identify with their own attributions of the problem, leading to low self-esteem,meaningless life, etc.,which in time leads to severe depression. In response to this situation, the author followed the intervention steps of the narrative therapy model and used a combination of professional social work methods and techniques such as listening, guiding and constructing, and worked with her to complete the treatment sessions of narrating the life story, externalising the dialogue, restructuring the dialogue and forming a new story.Through the analysis, analysis and construction of the client’s narrative and its metaphors, the client changed from being willing to express her thoughts and narrate her life story to correcting her irrational perceptions and gradually regaining the courage to face her problems and her ability to solve them. The post-case evaluation also showed that the narrative therapy was able to alleviate the depression of the clients and stimulate the potential and motivation of the depressed elderly with low vision to change and find solutions to their depression, ultimately achieving the goal of alleviating depression.Based on the above research process and findings, this paper suggests that when using narrative therapy for depression relief intervention, social workers should not judge the clients on the basis of their own values and morals, especially in the stage of externalising the problem, they should try to focus on the feelings, reactions and reflections of the clients, and pay attention to avoid the dominant words, expressions and cultural forms and customs on the clients. The subtle influence of dominant discourses, expressions and cultural forms and practices on the client. |
