| Volunteers are an important part of the human resources of mega sports events.They are not only a key factor to host mega sports events successfully,but also achieve the sustainability of events.With the continuous increase in the number of mega sports events and the promotion of the role of volunteers in the process of hosting events,what kind of leadership style should be adopted by event managers to manage a large number of volunteers,and to improve their level of work engagement is an urgent problem that needs to be resolved.In this context,exploring the effectiveness of leadership can not only provide useful suggestions for the management practice of volunteers in mega sports events,but also expand the research horizon of the mechanism of leadership style and volunteer motivation theory.In order to improve the effectiveness of the leadership of the mega sports events and volunteer engagement,providing suggestions for the volunteer human resource management practices of the event organization,holding events successfully,Study takes Self-Determination Theory as starting point to analyze the relationship between the leadership style in mega sports events and work engagement.The survey contains 344 FIBA Basketball World Cup volunteers found that:(1)Transformational leadership,transactional leadership and mega sports event volunteer work are all significantly positively correlated,and the transformational leadership style has a stronger correlation.(2)Transformational leadership,transactional leadership and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs of mega sports event volunteers are significantly positively correlated,but laissez-faire leadership is significantly negatively related to the satisfaction of basic psychological needs.(3)The satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of volunteers in mega sports events is significantly positively correlated with work engagement and the autonomy,competence,and relationship dimensions of the basic psychological needs are all significantly positively correlated with volunteers’ work engagement.By testing related research hypotheses,this study found the relationship between leadership style and volunteer work engagement in mega sports events.Based on the results,this study made the following recommendations:(1)Take transformational leadership as the main line to promote effective volunteer management practices.The transformational leadership style adopted by mega sports event volunteer managers can start from the aspects of idealized attributes,idealized behaviors,inspirational motivation,intellectual stimulation,individual consideration.To be specific,mega sports event managers should clarify the future vision and goals of volunteer service in the event,inspire the internal motivation of volunteers to participate in volunteer service;actively organize volunteer service theme publicity and education meetings to internalize the value of volunteers’ dedication and mutual assistance concept;Establish people-oriented management concept and provide volunteers with humanistic care.Volunteer management not only takes transformational leadership as the main line,but also needs to combine transactional leadership and laissez-faire leadership as a supplement to maximize the effectiveness of volunteer management practices.(2)Pay attention to the satisfaction of volunteers’ needs and cultivate stable and high-quality intrinsic motivation.Volunteer managers can actively create an atmosphere of support and encouragement by organizing daily summary exchange meetings within the team,allowing volunteers to finish the work according to their own ideas within the scope of reasonable compliance,satisfying volunteers’independent needs.Mega sports events organizers should Organize volunteer Training and exchange activities,setting up a special column for publicity of volunteers,and providing opportunities for volunteers to develop their abilities to meet the needs of volunteers.Mega sports events organizers should Organize ice-breaking activities,networking and team building activities to improve volunteers’ emotional connection and satisfy volunteers the needs of the relationship between people. |
