He Mingqi studied in the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Hangchow University as a work-study student in the 1930 s.Meanwhile,he participated in practical construction activities and accumulated a great deal of practical experience.As a teacher,he worked in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Architecture of Hangchow University and the Department of Civil Engineering of Zhejiang University,during which he compiled and drew a large number of lecture notes,textbooks and demonstration drawings of architectural courses.As one of the second generation of architects in China,he started architectural practice in the 1930 s.In the 1950 s,he designed plenty of excellent architectural works in the Huajiachi Campus and Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University.In the 1960 s,he engaged in the urban planning work of Hangzhou.Throughout his whole life,he has made outstanding contributions to the development of China’s architectural cause.The body of the thesis is divided into five parts: the first part clarifies and summarizes the life experience of He Mingqi;the second part studies his architecture education background;the third part analyzes and reviews his architecture practice and design works;the fourth part discusses and reviews his architecture education and academic activities;the final part dissects and summarizes his architectural creation,education and academic thoughts.This thesis is mainly construed on the basis of He Mingqi’s posthumous manuscripts that his children preserve and other related materials retained in Zhejiang University Archives,as well as with books and literature,alumni memoirs and interview records as a supplementary basis.The thesis focuses on He Mingqi’s architecture practice and architecture education activities and aims to record the history of modern architecture development in China through his individual case study.
