The Chinese Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022Edition)points out that the language curriculum should lay the foundation for students to form a correct outlook,a good personality and a sound character.As an important part of the language curriculum,all the functions of language textbooks point to the purpose of cultivating "what kind of person".Language textbooks contain numerous vivid images and create many rich characters,and the image of women is an important part of the image of characters.The selection and portrayal of female characters influence students’ choice of role models and their learning,and their value should not be underestimated.However,there is a tendency for the study of female images in textbooks to be solidified and rigid at present.Therefore,based on the hierarchy of needs theory,this paper compares and analyzes the hierarchy of needs of female images in nine sets of textbooks during the century from 1920 to 2020,in an attempt to broaden the research perspective of female images in textbooks and,at the same time,to use history as a guide for the selection and depiction of female images in textbooks in the future.The first chapter is the introduction,which outlines the basic situation of the selected topic.By clarifying the significance of the selected topic and clarifying the relevant concepts,it combs the research on gender equality in textbooks,the research on the number and types of female images,the research on the educational value of female images,and the research on the teaching strategies of female images,and comprehensively determines the starting point of this research.The second chapter uses the historical research method to select one of the most representative junior high school Chinese textbooks at that time(except the 1970s)from1920 to 2020,and makes a statistical analysis of the frequency of female images from the number of female authors and heroines.From the family role and social role,the female image role is statistically analyzed.This paper analyzes the female images in junior high school textbooks in the past hundred years,laying the groundwork for the further analysis of the needs of female images.The third chapter explicates the hierarchy of needs theory and sorts out the five needs of the female figure based on the hierarchy of needs theory.It shows the overview of the hierarchy of needs of female images and its trend of change during the century.It provides a basis for the later chapter to summarize the changing characteristics of the hierarchy of needs of female images during the century.The fourth chapter,based on the data of the demand level of female image in the past hundred years,reveals the changing characteristics of the demand level of female image in the past hundred years.Tracing back to the source,the author tries to find out the reasons from three aspects: women’s educational concept,literary concept and trend of thought,educational trend of thought and policy.The fifth chapter,taking history as a mirror,explores the enlightenment to the current textbook compilation and teaching practice from the evolution of women’s images for a hundred years.Based on the hierarchy of needs theory,this study uses comparative research,historical research,and content analysis to sort out the hierarchy of needs of female images in nine sets of junior high school language textbooks over a century,and to explore their changing characteristics and reasons.The study broadens the perspective of the study of female images in textbooks and reveals the implications for textbook writing and teaching today.
