Plural well-being is an individual’s overall and diverse assessment of their quality of life,and is an important indicator of mental health.Research has shown that plural well-being will be use social networking sites,especially the influence of passive social networking websites use.Passive social networking is when people only look at information presented by others on social networking sites without interacting and communicating with them.As a digital indigenous,junior high school students use social networking sites as an important tool for their interpersonal communication.Therefore,exploring the relationship between passive use of social networking sites and plural well-being among middle school students is of great practical significance.This study starts with the relationship between passive use of social networking site,social networking site upward social comparison,self compassion,and plural well-being,and explores the impact and mechanism of passive use of social networking site on plural well-being among junior high school students.It provides theoretical guidance and educational suggestions for improving the level of plural well-being among junior high school students.In this study,1253 junior high school students from two middle schools in Shandong Province were investigated with the Passive Use of Social Networking Sites Scale,the Upward Social Comparison Scale,the Self-Compassion Scale,and the Plural Well-Being Scale.The data were statistically analyzed with SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS macro program,and the following main results were obtained:(1)The passive use of social networking sites and upward social comparison of junior well-being are at upper middle level.(2)The passive use of social networking sites of junior high school students has significant differences in grades,there are significant differences in gender and grade in upward social comparison,self-compassion has significant differences in gender and whether it is an only child,there are significant differences in plural well-being among grades.(3)The passive use of social networking sites can significantly and negatively predict the level of plural well-being of junior high school students.(4)Among the effects of passive social networking site use on plural happiness of junior high school students,upward social comparison has a partial mediating effect.That is,the more frequently they use passive social networking sites,the more frequently they will have upward social comparison and the lower the level of plural happiness.(5)Self-compassion plays a moderating role in the direct path and the second half of the intermediary path of the impact of passive use of social networking sites on plural well-being,That is,while self-compassion moderates the effects of passive social networking site use on plural well-being,it also moderates the effects of upward social comparison on plural well-being.(6)Based on empirical research results,educational suggestions are proposed from the perspectives of schools,families,and individuals to enhance the plural well-being of middle school students,such as enriching campus cultural activities and reducing the frequency of students’ use of social media websites.Reasonably arrange the course content,attach importance to the cultivation and improvement of students’ self compassion.Play the role of parents as role models and guide children to make progress in upward social comparison.Junior high school students should establish reasonable values and avoid excessive upward social comparison.
